Austin developers contribute to Sony PlayStation 3, North American release Friday

Austin, Texas — November 14, 2006 — Syncopated Software this week completes its contract with Foster City, California-based Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. of America, through which Syncopated Software contributed to the development of core software technology used in the Sony PlayStation 3, initially released in Japan on November 11 and to be released across North America this Friday, November 17, 2006.

The new core technology works with the PlayStation 3's operating system, enabling games to maximize the complex machine's high-level of performance and thus deliver the most userimmersive experience possible of any game system. The software runs on the PlayStation 3's central processing unit, the Cell Broadband Engine, which was designed in Austin jointly by Sony, Toshiba and IBM, and which for the first time allows the computing power of a video game console to surpass that of most desktop computers.

Syncopated Software was selected for this project primarily based on the game development system design experience of its founder, John Carlsen. Starting in 1991, Mr. Carlsen created game development software tools and proprietary cross-development interfaces for Sunnyvale, California-based Iguana Entertainment, which moved to Austin in 1993, later becoming Acclaim Studios Austin and closing in 2004. (A cross-development interface enables content created on one type of computer to be transfered to and used on another, such as a video game console.) Mr. Carlsen began his career in electronic entertainment during the mid-1980s while still in high school. Before helping to establish and move Iguana Entertainment, Mr. Carlsen worked for video game pioneers Atari, Activision, and legendary Atari cofounder and industry father Nolan Bushnell.

Syncopated Software designs, develops and integrates electronic circuits and computer software into consumer products and other hardware systems for entertainment, industrial, scientific and commercial applications. Prior to its work with Sony, Syncopated Software also created specialized database software for the World Congress on Information Technology, a biennial global roaming event hosted by Austin in May.
